In a military company, nobody has to hide because everyone already knows. But how can they heal? Here’s where the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center comes in.

Later in the war, his appendix burst. All the morphine was ashore for another landing, but a bunch of sailors held him down while a lone corpsman opened him up and rummaged around, trying to clean him out. It took four hours.Īfter the war, his wife and parents watched helplessly as he played with toy soldiers on the floor, trying to sort himself out. The things soldiers see, the things they do, the things they endure seem beyond what they can tell their families. Some can’t stand the telling - and they can’t believe anyone could still love them if they knew. Nor, sometimes, can they love themselves. “There’ll be no praying over me,” he said. "You know my mind.” He’d become an atheist that day and knowing I’d be handling his funeral, made it clear. He was dying of cancer before he finally told me what happened. And it works. We just have not known, when our emergencies are over, how to return them to the lives they had before. Nor, through most of history, has anyone cared to know. Since ancient times, we’ve known how to take civilians off the streets and turn them into soldiers. Since 9/11, an estimated 7,057 service members have died during military operations but over 30,000 active-duty personnel and veterans have taken their lives. It’s four to one, suicides to combat fatalities. Over the last many months, I’ve been trying to direct your gaze to various organizations that help others through tough times. Knowing the holiday season is a particular time of giving, I’d like to recommend one last outfit for your consideration: The Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center.
